Video Game Reviews of Civilization IVCustomer Review: extreme entertainment Summary: 4 Starsthis product is hard to put down once u start. the different scenarios add a fun challenge to the game. i defiantly recommend this to anyone who enjoys strategy and turn base style games.
Customer Review: Great game poor port Summary: 3 StarsThis is a fantastic game, but the third party port of this game leaves something to be desired. Only recently has the latest game revision become supported, but the latest expansion is not. Worse, the game suffers from crashing (mean-time to crash seems to be around 1-2 hours), poor info graphs (compared to the PC version), and a buggy world-view.
Bottom line: It's playable on Mac... it's just not equal to the PC version at all. Also, it seems to crash mainly when playing in multi-player.
Customer Review: Won't Run... Summary: 1 StarsSo I bought this, assuming it would run on my MacPro. Apparently, that's not the case. Every time I attempt to download the 1.74 update, the game hard-freezes about 1/2 way through the download. Not only that, the game requires you to insert the DVD before playing! What is this, 1995?!? You'd think a dual-Xeon machine with 6GB RAM would have no problem running the game...
And why is there no download for the 1.74 patch? I can download 1.61c, but 1.74 requires you to use the in-game downloader. Very annoying! Not only that, the support system is convoluted. I can't possibly be the only person to have this problem! If Aspyr support doesn't answer my problem soon, I'm sending this one back to Amazon.
I'll post again if anything changes.
The game crashes often, for some reason, so I eventually stopped playing it. Perhaps by now it's updated to the point where it will play. I just can't get excited about playing it anymore.
Customer Review: The best since the original! Summary: 5 StarsCivilization was one of the first video games I ever played. I still remember my first game, when the computer's tanks easily rolled over my horsemen. This newest version is the best of the uneven sequels. If you don't know, the game basically tasks you to guide a civilization from the days of nomadic tribes to the conquest of space. Along the way you research technology, colonize the world, wage war, trade resources and build wonders of the world. Civilization does a little bit of everything, from strategic war gaming to city management, none of them in the detail you might find in other games, but with such a variety that you really feel like you are running a nation. The graphics in this newest version are excellent, but a bit heavy on computer requirements. Really, is it necessary to have such steep requirements for a game that is fairly simple at its heart? I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Leonard Nimoy's excellent vocal narration.
The mac version is excellent, except for one thing: Mac publisher Aspyr is doing an awful job of publishing updates. The problem is that you must be running the same version to play against PC players, so internet play is impossible until they get off their lazy behinds and update the game.
Customer Review: Excellent graphics, but just tooooo complex Summary: 2 StarsHaving spent many, many hours playing Civilization 3, I was expecting Civilization 4 to be even better. Well, the graphics are much, much better, but I found the game just too complex. There are too many decisions to make, for my blood. Of course much of it can be put on automatic, but what is the fun of just watching the action? I found the new religion feature to be confusing. I was also disappointed in finding that I could not view as much of the game field as I could on Civilization 3. If I zoomed out far enough to see more of the field, then the field became blurry. I finally gave up and went back to Civilizaton 3.
